The Good as Gold Tour, 2005BFA Submission, University of CanterburyOctober, 2005
The Good as Gold Tour resulted from an enquiry into my dad’s skills as a sign writer, particularly his training in the early 1960s and his skills in lettering and brushwork.

A collection of gold leaf and enamel signs emerged from his instruction, serving as title pages for an essay investigating the complexities when an obsolete practice is recreated in the present.

The resulting booklet contained a map of the last of the original gold leaf signs in central Christchurch. The walking tour encouraged a critical reflection on authenticity, originality, necessity and purpose: did my signs slip into kitsch, pastiche, or parody when viewed alongside the originals?
